Call it battle of the abs. Or the teen screams heard round the world. Either way, Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon did more business on its opening weekend than any other movie this year. Now that it’s the biggest fall opening ever at $142.8 million and its opening day number of $72.7 million outgrossed The Dark Knight’s first-day figure, Hollywood should finally accept that women drive the box office in a big way. “It’s great that the greenlighters in town have realized that little girls go to the movies,” says MGM’s president of marketing Michael Vollman. “But this genre has worked forever. To Sir With Love was an angsty girl movie.”
So what will this fickle, yet incredibly devoted audience turn to next? Disney thinks it could be…fairies. The studio has scooped up Aprilynne Pike’s best-selling young adult novel Wings and cast Miley Cyrus in an adaptation. New Regency is banking on a new novel from Ann Brashares (author of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) called My Name is Memory, while Lionsgate hopes tweens line up for an adaptation of author Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. “Some will work and some won’t,” Summit’s co-chairman and CEO Rob Friedman says of the girl-driven projects. No matter what, “It won’t be The Twilight Saga. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Alex and Kiowa gets Aced

Aced Magazine was able to interview Alex Meraz and Kiowa Gordon where the two men answered questions regarding their roles in New Moon, auditioning and being part of the Twilight Saga. Here is an excerpt:
How did you get into acting and land the roles in New Moon?
Alex: I have always had an interest in film, and all its different components. There are so many different layers to a good film, and I always wanted to do it and try it out. I got a great role in Twilight. I mean, that is a great launching pad for a new career.
Kiowa: What can I say, this is a great way to start an acting career. The movie is going to be great all the way.
The two of you play werewolves in the film, but most of the time you are shirtless. How did you buff up for the roles of Paul and Embry?
Kiowa: As for buffing up for the role, the studio hired us a trainer. He had worked on thefilm 300, so he knew how to jack up people.
Alex: I do karate and wrestling so I was already in shape, but I had to gain weight back and get beefed up again. I have a hate relationship with food and lifting weights, but it was all worth it.
Some directors can be tough on a cast. What was it like working with Chris Weitz?
Alex: The director was great! In a big budget film like this there are a lot of things going on all at once, and he was able to spread things out so evenly that you did not feel any pressure. He is a very soft-spoken man. He was a man of few words, and in acting you really don’t want someone to explain too much to you in words because it takes away from what you are doing. He kept it simple. We had a really great working relationship.
Kiowa: He is the first director I have ever worked with, and it was great to get to work with someone so great.

Timbaland gets Twilight inspired
A few months ago, musician/producer Timbaland has mentioned that he was inspired by Twilight in making some songs in his new album, most especially for the song, The Morning After. He even mentioned that it would be nice if he could get Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for the music video of his song, The Morning After. Well, he wasnt able to get them but nonetheless he made an awesome Twilight inspired video.
Check it out!

Chris Weitz: His New Moon fears and triumphs

Entertainment Weekly has a new interview with New Moon director Chris Weitz were he discuss his New Moon fears, triumphs and what he will remember from the cast. Here is an excerpt:
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was your biggest fear going into [opening] weekend?
CHRIS WEITZ: I didn’t have any particular fears. The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.Did the negative reviews surprise you?
Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews. Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied New Moon, it’s rather unsurprising. I do wish there was more appreciation for cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I think he’s a genius and I think he made something beautiful.A lot of fans say they like the movie more than the book, that New Moon was their least favorite book in the series.
New Moon takes a lot of time to read and you have a lot of time without Edward in the picture. And here in the compressed scenario of the movie, there is less time without RPatz. And the fact that Taylor [Lautner] does such a great job, to the reading audience who’s been very skeptical of him, here he is in the flesh, and it’s quite something. Were there moments that you felt constrained by the book? Anything you wanted to take out but couldn’t?
The studio, my editor, and I were all working off the same piece of music. The only way I can make that interesting is to compare it to my previous experience of The Golden Compass. I don’ think the studio had read the book. Maybe they had heard the audio book while sipping Zinfandel. Eventually, they were appalled and frightened by it. At a certain point they considered cutting loose the author. They considered and executed the complete regearing and destruction of what I thought was going to be a pretty good movie. It was a shame and pursued me through what should have been my sleep for a good year.
